Digital Skills Training Project for the ICT and Related Sectors
On 13 May this year, the opening event of Digital Week, “Towards a Digital and Secure Latvia”, took place as a livestream organised by the Latvian Information and Communication Technology Association (LIKTA). It served as the introduction to the annual informative and educational campaign “Digital Week 2024”, which ran from 13 to 18 May. Everyone interested was invited to participate with the aim of helping both companies and residents discover, learn, and develop new digital skills.
During the event, Latvia’s priorities in the field of Digital Transformation were discussed, taking into account the objectives set by the European Union’s Digital Decade and Latvia’s Digital Transformation Guidelines. Emphasis was placed on digital security, artificial intelligence, and the development of digitalisation in businesses and the public sector. Digital Week 2024 covered topics such as digital skills and artificial intelligence, digital services and skills for residents, digital skills and solutions for entrepreneurs, Digital Security Day, and digital skills in education.
Digital Week in Latvia is organised as part of ALL Digital Weeks 2024 and this year took place in Latvia for the 15th time. For the first time, the final day of “Digital Week 2024” – 18 May – was dedicated to Museum Night, during which museums across Latvia were invited to showcase the digitised treasures in their collections.

Tell us about yourself and the organization you represent!
I represent the Latvian Computer Technology Association, which is the oldest association in the sector. It was founded in 1997 as an association of computer manufacturers. My name is Dzintars Zariņš, and I have been a long-time leader of this association.
Why is it important to keep learning?
Considering what the old politicians said, it encourages us to learn, learn, and learn again; it is never too late to learn. Learning is necessary to strengthen the intellect and increase competitiveness. Philosophically, it is a deep question, but the main point is that today’s economic conditions demand demonstrating oneself as a competitive company or individual.
Which courses are most relevant within the project?
All courses within this project are relevant because entrepreneurs choose only what they need and are willing to pay for, as the courses are not completely free. The courses are designed with a specific purpose for certain companies that understand what is necessary to increase their competitiveness and to develop the required knowledge or skills.
How are internet technologies (IT) entering the industry, and why is it important to learn them?
Skills in working with the internet were learned many years ago. Today, new challenges are becoming relevant, as we know, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and other questions related to this stage of development. A person working in this field is interested in acquiring new tools for their work; therefore, we can say that the opportunities provided by AI and the internet are worth learning. Many companies will take the opportunity to master the possibilities and innovations offered by AI, because those who do not do so risk the quality of their products and the development of their company.
How do you see industry development under the influence of IT?
The Latvian Computer Technology Association currently represents an industry that includes product logistics, increasing IT product sales, improving services, ensuring fair public procurement, managing productive packaging, and developing data carrier compensation. IT plays a huge role in these processes, as everything relies on data flow located on the global web. The courses and training areas in which knowledge can be gained are highly differentiated and tailored.
What is your wish for the project participants?
My wish for the project participants is not to lose their passion and to use the knowledge provided by experienced instructors with great responsibility toward themselves, their employers, the state, and humanity as a whole—for the full development of humanity!
