Project No. 2.3.1.2.i.0/2/23/A/CFLA/001

Digital waste must be sorted

As the volume of digital data grows, so does the amount of digital waste. We are witnessing the shrinking gap between the real and virtual worlds. The digital world is becoming increasingly realistic, while the real world is becoming as flexible and adaptable as the digital one. This results in more and more clicks in the digital space. Digital waste refers to any content or files that are stored but are actually unnecessary.

Interesting facts about digital waste:

  • The energy consumption of data storage servers has increased by 266% since 2017.
  • 90% of all data is no longer used three months after being stored.
  • One email produces on average 0.3–4g of CO₂—equivalent to leaving a light bulb on for 6 minutes.
  • In 2007, the total amount of data generated globally reached 1 zettabyte. Just three years later, it was already 2 zettabytes, and by 2035, we are expected to generate more than 2,000 zettabytes of data.

Digital waste is a problem because creating and storing virtual waste consumes real energy and produces CO₂ emissions. Every day, hundreds of billions of emails and tens of trillions of spam emails are sent worldwide. Each year, this generates 20 million tons of CO₂.

VAS Latvijas Valsts radio un televīzijas centrs (LVRTC) and the association Pēdas.lv, organizer of the Big Cleanup campaign, have signed a cooperation agreement to promote an environmentally friendly lifestyle and to inform and educate the public on ways to reduce digital waste and limit its creation.

Baltic Information Technologies LLC

The development of information technology will happen – society wants it and is moving toward it

What is your and your company’s experience in the industry?
I represent the company Baltijas Informācijas tehnoloģijas SIA, which was founded in 1992 in the premises of the Mathematics Institute of the University of Latvia. The leading employees established the company, and overall, our experience is extensive. The company’s main area of activity is the supply and maintenance of information technology infrastructure, including service support, cloud computing, and customer service.

Why is continuous learning important?
As Lenin once said, it is important to learn, learn, and learn again! I believe that continuous learning is important in every industry and for every individual, both personally and as part of a group. In our sector, learning is constant and extensive because the methods we use to achieve goals are constantly evolving, and the nature of our work itself is changing.

What competencies are most important at the management level?
The first competence at the management level is the ability to generate profit. The second is to create products and services that society truly needs, ensuring that the company remains relevant and provides benefits to all.

How is IT developing, and why is it important to learn it?
Information technology develops in a spiral, but in my view—which differs from many others—it progresses relatively slowly. Developments focus on user interfaces, usability, and the functionality that IT enables. However, over the past 30 years, much has remained the same; what we see today is largely what was envisioned decades ago. Learning IT is essential because methods and applications are constantly evolving, and keeping up ensures competitiveness.

How do you see the industry developing under IT influence in the next 5–10 years?
Development in Latvia will definitely continue because society wants it and is moving in that direction. I would very much like to see Latvia provide services that benefit society as a whole. Currently, our industry has small niches, but I hope to see them grow and become more concentrated. The main direction should focus on providing value to others, not just using what others provide to us.
